Overview

The Master Series M15 subwoofer is a high stroke, low distortion subwoofer tailored for moderate to large sealed applications and infinite baffle. The M15 uses a composite fiber cone with a dual gap magnetic structure. The M15 yields 40mm of peak to peak linear excursion and 65mm peak to peak mechanical excursion. The 76.2mm diameter voice coil with aluminum former ensures high power handling.

The M15 uses a ferrite magnet of Y35 grade. With the machined 1010 grade steel for the yoke and washers, the resulting in-gap field strength is 0.5 Telsa. The dual 2 layer (total of 4 layers) pure copper voice coil configuration offered in 2 and 4 Ohm nominal per voice coil offers a range of impedances from 1 to 8 Ohms.

The 38mm thick dual gap top plate assembly features a 20mm tall and 14mm deep rebate. This allows for extended travel and greatly flattened BL (motor force) over stroke. The rebate is filled with a 3.5mm thick aluminum ring to reduce inductance resulting in a usable bandwidth to 1 kHz, for exceptional transient performance.

Crossover Frequency

As the M15 is a subwoofer, it should be low passed as low as possible. The actual frequency of crossover should be determined by the capability of your components that cover the mid-bass/midrange frequencies. Typically a crossover point below 80 Hz is recommended. Raising the crossover point can pull the image more towards the M15, but it can also increase the mid-bass output of the system. As always, every install is different and final system settings should be done based upon your application and mating equipment.

Power Handling

Power handling for subwoofers has two basic considerations: thermal power handling and mechanical power handling. It is quite possible to place a subwoofer inside a cabinet where the thermal power handling limit is reached well before the mechanical (motion based) power handling limit. Likewise, an enclosure can result in excessive motion and reaching the mechanical limit well before the thermal power limit. An excessively hot trunk, or well-insulated sealed box/trunk situation can lower thermal power handling limits.

Thus when installing a subwoofer one must consider the application in which the subwoofer will be installed, and ensure an appropriately sized amplifier is used to drive the subwoofer. It is often said "clipping kills speakers" but for subwoofers this is not necessarily true, as it is better to clip an amp a bit than to overpower a subwoofer.

Application Guidelines

The M15 woofer is best used in moderate sealed to infinite baffle. It can be used infinite baffle to the outside air but protection from the elements should be provided for the rear of the woofer. The best application is completely dependent upon the vehicle, position within the vehicle, and desired output and bandwidth of the system. Your installer should be able to use the provided information above to determine an ideal enclosure for your application.
